Keep Your Heart Pumping

It's National American Heart Month!  Yes, there is a "holi" day, month, year for everything. This one is truly important though (not like "No Socks Day" - May 8th- I kid you not.)

February is all about your heart. Having nothing to do with Valentine's Day and your romantic heart and everything to do with your cardiovascular health. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S. The upside of this is that it is to a great extent preventable.

Heart health is one of the most crucial aspects of maintaining overall health and wellness. The heart is a vital organ that is keeping us alive! Unfortunately, many of us don't take the time to take care of ourselves and our heart health deteriorates.

If you would like to keep your heart beating as it should then read on...

Exercise - Physical activity helps to keep your heart healthy by increasing its strength and reducing the risk of heart disease. Set a goal to exercise for at least 30 minutes a day, five days a week. Activities like brisk walking (we are not talking about just walking the dog here), cycling, and swimming are great and can be fun. I just bought myself a little rebounder (small trampoline) and I love it! It's all about the playlist!

Healthy diet- A diet high in saturated and trans fats, processed foods, soda, sugar, and salt can increase the risk of heart disease. Stay away from the drive thru please! Instead, aim to eat a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein.

Reduce stress - I know it's easier said than done, but chronic stress can have a negative impact on heart health. Finding ways to reduce stress, such as meditation, yoga, or deep breathing exercises, can help to keep your heart healthy. I find that a walk around the lake in my community can really help (this walk you can stroll leisurely for).

Quit smoking - Seriously, you still smoke?? No judgement (I promise). Smoking is one of the leading causes of heart disease. Quitting smoking can reduce the risk of heart disease and improve overall health.

Get enough sleep - Lack of sleep can increase the risk of heart disease, as well as other health problems. Aim to get at least 7 hours of sleep each night. I find that bubble baths are very relaxing and can help you get a great night of sleep. They are not just for children!

Drink up! - Not alcohol (sorry) - Drinking plenty of water is essential for heart health. It helps to flush out toxins and maintain blood volume, which is essential for a healthy heart.

Did you know that even just losing 10 pounds can dramatically improve your health?

Come see me at my Natural Weight Loss Center in Boca Raton if you would like a helping hand.

Prioritize your heart and your whole body will reap the rewards!
