What the Heck Are You Putting in Your Mouth?!

It's National Nutrition Month!  Let's pay attention.

Yes, we have a month, week, day and heck probably even an hour designated for something don't we (by the way I have often wondered who decides this)? That being said, National Nutrition Month actually is a good one. It's important to remember that what we ingest impacts our entire body so why not feed it something great?

I am not here to make you feel badly about your choices, but just to let you know you have options. These options can make you feel energized and healthy so why not consider them?

It's all about balance and color. You want to fill your plate with at least 3 different colors. What this means is a variety of fruits and vegetables.

First - Fill your plate at least halfway with some yummy, colorful non-starchy veggies like spinach, squash, broccoli (the darker the green the more nutrients).

Next - Pick a lean protein to go with it. I have been leaning towards seafood. It digests quickly so you won't be too laden down. Lamb is lean if you are looking for a red meat. Your protein can also come from beans and legumes or quinoa which is a fantastic source of protein and also covers the next part of the plate that I want to mention... whole grains.

Lastly - Whole grains should take a quarter of the plate (not the entire plate!). Quinoa, oats, sweet potatoes, farro are all great. If you go with rice then make sure it's brown rice.

You know I believe in balance and feeling empowered when you eat. A well-rounded nutritious meal makes you feel amazing the more you do it.
